Blackburn 4 – 3 Chelsea Carling Cup Highlights

December 3, 2009

Paul Robinson was Blackburn Rovers hero on the night after his double penalty save in a shootout sent the Ewood Park team into a Carling Cup semi-final encounter against Aston Villa.

Croatian striker Nikola Kalinic gave Rovers an early lead as he tapped home a Pascal Chimbonda cross from the left to give the home side an impressive start.

Chelsea looked anything but the runaway favourites for the Premier League and the copious changes Carlo Ancelloti made for this match undoubtedly affected their fluidity going forward as the likes of Joe Cole, Salamon Kalou and Michael Ballack all failed to get them going in the first half.

The changed after the break though as Didier Drogba came off the bench to equalise before Kalou slotted home a second for Chelsea.

But Rovers refused to surrender and Brett Emerton scored a lucky equaliser courtesy of a cross-cum-shot that sneaked in before Benni McCarthy’s extra-time penalty looked to have sealed.

Paulo Ferreira sent it to spotkicks though with a last-gasp strike but Robinson saved efforts from Michael Ballack and Gael Kakuta to send most of Ewood Park home with a huge smile.
