Everton 1 – 0 Liverpool Highlights
February 4, 2009
Everton knocked out 10 man liverpool tonight as the game went into extra time.Dan Gosling scored in the 118th minute in the FA Cup fourth-round replay at Goodison Park.
Everton were unchanged from the weekend, where they lost 1-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford. Victor Anichebe, the club’s only fit eligible striker with new signing Jo cup-tied, did not even make the substitutes’ bench.Liverpool made two changes from the side that defeated Chelsea 2-0 at the weekend. Andrea Dossena came in for Fabio Aurelio at left-back and Lucas partnered Xabi Alonso in central midfield, taking the place of Argentina captain Javier Mascherano
Liverpool’s best change fell to Xabi Alonso on seven minutes, who sent a low volley just wide of the far post after poor defensive header from Pienaar.Gerrard went off with a injury very early and was replaced.
Everton, meanwhile, went closest when Tony Hibbert was able to cross the ball from the right, with Leon Osman and Cahill both going close but not forcing Pepe Reina into action after good work from the full-back.
There was little change in the second half, which was big on endeavour but again surprisingly light on quality.Lucas was given his sending orders due to a second red card which gave advantage to the blues.Everton started to pile on the pressure and camped in liverpool’s half it was defence verus attack.
Tim Howard made one superb save when, just after the hour mark, he dived at the feet of Albert Riera after Xabi Alonso’s through ball almost made the otherwise excellent Phil Jagielka pay for a rare misplaced pass.
Extra-time saw Reina make a wonderful double-save from Osman and substitute Dan Gosling, while Cahill headed a corner inches wide after he towered above Carragher and Skrtel
But it was gosling who had the last say as livepool played for pens he capitalised on some hesitance from Arbeloa, shimmied one way then another before clipping a shot off the outstretched leg of Skrtel to leave Reina helpless and send Everton into the fifth round
