Paraguay 1 – 0 Argentina Highlights
September 10, 2009
Is this the end of maradona? Argentina lose yet again and to be honest there looked no flow to the football argentina used to play as paraguay beat them last night to reach the world cup finals next year.Maradona persisted with his controversial, inexperienced line-up which left Leo Messi and Sergio Aguero with little support in attack from the struggling Fernando Ruben Gago and Javier Mascherano in midfield.
Paraguay had no such problems creating danger. Nelson Valdez hit the bar in the seventh minute but made no mistake on an assist from the outstanding Salvador Cabanas 20 minutes later witha stunning team goal. The hosts were further encouraged by the expulsion of Veron, for a second yellow card, in the 53rd minute.
Maradona responded by sending on veteran striker Martin Palermo for his first international appearance in nine years, at the age of yes 39! – to no apparent avail. Deep into stoopage time Palermo headed across the face of goal but fellow substitute Rolando Schiavi was just too late to push the ball over the line
“I do my job, I have my team and I’m going to go ahead,” said Maradona, who looked depressed but composed.
He said the players were understandably “down in the dumps” over the defeat, but just like any player would after losing a match.
“Criticism doesn’t upset me. While there is blood in my veins I’ll fight for Argentina’s qualification.”
What a goal
