england win England Win Over Germany World Cup 90 RematchOld professional England legends and a few of the North East’s best, have lined up against some familiar opposition at St James’ Park tonight.

The core of England’s 1990 World Cup semi-final team played against a Germany side led by Lothar Mattaus to raise money for Sir Bobby Robson’s charitywhich was a big hit on the night.

The match, which began after a rendition of Italia 90 anthem Nessun Dorma, was intended as a replay of the Turin semi, famously won on penalties by West Germany.

Paul Gascoigne, Peter Shilton, David Platt, Mark Wright, Des Walker, Peter Beardsley and John Barnes were among the Italia 90 stars on show in front of 33,000 people in Newcastle.Oh and a naked man makes a  guest appearance see the video below great dummy he pulls off :)

The game also featured celebrities from the music and entertainment world, such as Jimmy Nail, Craig David and Angus Deayton, as well as Alan Shearer returning to Newcastle, but only as a player this time.

Ex-England and Magpies manager Robson, in a wheelchair as he battles cancer for a fifth time, was introduced to both teams and presented with a lifetime achievement award by UEFA before kick-off.

The match was not as tight as the original 1-1 draw, as England came from behind to win 3-2.

Germany raced into a 2-0 lead with early goals from Thomas Helmer and Fredi Bobic.

But England hit back before the break with a Les Ferdinand header and a well-struck Alan Thompson free-kick.

Then 11 minutes from time, Shearer was brought down for a penalty by Jens Nowotny and stepped up to score.

Shearer said: “Bobby really deserves this match after everything he’s done. I feel I owe him a personal debt.

“When he came in as Newcastle manager he got me enjoying football again and playing the way I can.”

Sir Bobby also had some kind words to say about Shearer, saying he was “very grateful to Alan” for playing in the game.

Ex-Newcastle and Tottenham star Gascoigne, whose tears made the headlines after the 1990 match, said: “Sir Bobby is a legend over the world”.

“He was the one who gave me my first run-out for the England team.

“When I saw him it was quite heartbreaking to see him that away but he is battling away and keeping on top of it, which is great.
