Hull and Phil Brown ended the day singing in utter joy as they stayed up, despite losing 1-0 to Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson risked the wrath of a potential national outcry by fielding a totally second-string XI, but Darron Gibson’s wonder strike was enough to make sure the champions’ integrity remained intact, while Hull had done enough before kick-off. Sunderland can look forward to the prospect of massive financial investment in England’s top flight after they enjoyed a relatively comfortable day losing 3-2 to Chelsea. The Black Cats were never in danger of relegation all afternoon, despite Nicolas Anelka’s wonder goal that earns him the golden boot. Kieran Richardson had Sunderland level, but further strikes from Salomon Kalou and Ashley Cole rendered Kenwyne Jones’ late strike mere consolation – not that anybody cared at that point.Guus Hiddink gives his reaction to his final match in charge of Chelsea

After the game shocking news that Sbragia Quit   Sbragia has since been quoted as saying the following:

“I spoke with chairman Niall Quinn this week and I think we need a bigger name to carry the club further. I’ve done everything I came to, I’ve kept the club in the Premier League. I would like to have done it better but I’m pleased we stayed up.”

See the video here Sbragia Steps Down .Alan Nixon lists the potential targets to replace the big man. “Frank Rijkaard, Martin Jol and Slaven Bilic have all been linked with the job but Sunderland could be ready to make a move for Celtic boss Gordon Strachan in the next few days.”

At the top end of the table, Roy Hodgson’s magic conjured up a European adventure for Fulham as they booked seventh spot, regardless of their 2-0 defeat to Everton. Leon Osman grabbed both goals to give his England claims a boost, sending The Toffees to Wembley for the FA Cup final in buoyant mood.

Tottenham miss out on Europe but can still be proud of a wonderful turnaround under Harry Redknapp, who ended on a losing note as Liverpool won 3-1. The Reds finish the season as the first side in Premier League history to lose only two games without winning the league, but Fernando Torres’ 50th goal for the club, Dirk Kuyt’s deflected effort and Yossi Benayoun’s late finish gave departing legend Sami Hyypia a winning send-off. Robbie Keane scored on his return to Anfield, but refrained from celebrating what must have been a sweet goal.Emotional Hyypia sad to leave Liverpool see video also hows the fans pressured rafa to being him off the bench see here

Elsewhere, Arsenal signalled their intent for next season, smashing Stoke 4-1. Robin Van Persie starred with two goals and an assist as Abou Diaby and a James Beattie own goal also notched for Arsenal – whom conceded to a Ricardo Fuller penalty. It as an impressive end to a frustrating season from the Londoners, whose fans showed their support for manager Wenger by chanting his name throughout the game. Wenger, who had rounded on his critics ahead of this match, will have been pleased with the response of Arsenal’s players and supporters.

Manchester City ensured a top 10 finish with an understated 1-0 win over Bolton, Felipe Caicedo spectacularly netting the only goal. The goal was a neat training ground move as Stephen Ireland’s chip was met by an overhead kick from Micah Richards and Felipe Caicedo tapped in easilyThe win for City meant they become the first side to go through a whole Premier League season without drawing a game at home

Blackburn bade fairwell to Kerimoglu Tugay but they could not give him a winning send-off as they drew 0-0 with already-relegated West Brom. Both sides had their fair share of opportunities, but effort was lacking in the blazing sunshine at Ewood Park. The main talking point came on 71 minutes when Rovers substitute Jason Roberts was sent off for an elbow on Baggies defender Jonas Olsson

In the final game of the day, Wigan made sure their excellent season finished on a high, Hugo Rodallega tapping home for a 1-0 win over Portsmouth.Colombian gratefully cashed in on Sol Campbell’s slip to tap in his third Premier League goal of the season. Wigan deserved only their third win in 18 games in a tepid game featuring two sides with little to play for. Portsmouth never severely tested Wigan keeper Richard Kingson, with John Utaka blasting their only chance high over the bar

Middlesbrough and Newcastle get relegated

May 24, 2009

shearer newcastle relegated 300x194 Middlesbrough and Newcastle get relegatedAston Villa 1 Newcastle 0 Newcastle were relegated after Damien Duff’s unfortunate own goal.Alan Shearer’s attempt to rescue Newcastle from relegation ended in failure on Sunday as Damien Duff’s own goal sentenced them to a 1-0 defeat and Championship football next season.

Shearer’s side capitulated without the kind of fight he was known for during his illustrious playing career and their 16-year stay in the top flight ended with a whimper.

Villa have been abject over the last few months themselves, with only five other Premier League club’s with a worse home record and they had won just once in their last 15 games.

But Newcastle were simply not good enough to exploit the fragility of Martin O’Neill’s side and looked very inch a Championship team.

Seven years ago Newcastle were in Europe with Bobby Robson and Shearer was scoring five goals in an 8-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday, now the potential for a Leeds United-style slide down the leagues is all too evident.

Shearer will meet with owner Mike Ashley this week and announce whether he will be getting his map book out to find a route to Scunthorpe United next season

Gareth Barry’s long-range drive was aimed well wide but the ball diverted off Duff’s outstretched leg and crept past the despairing Steve Harper (38).

Harper had tipped over a Craig Gardner drive but the Magpies saw a shot from Peter Lovenkrands cleared off the line and an Obafemi Martins header go wide, before David Edgar’s second booking.

Celebrity fan of Newcastle United and racing pundit John McCririck said followers of the team had a history of suffering.

He told Sky News: “We can take pain, we can take defeat but not the way it happened today.

“I don’t think any team has got more passionate fans than Newcastle.”

West Ham 2 Middlesbrough 1

Middlesbrough’s inevitable relegation to the Championship was confirmed after they lost at Upton Park.

Junior Stanislas struck the angle of the Middlesbrough bar in the 20th minute, but returning striker Carlton Cole put the Hammers ahead when he converted Herita Ilunga’s cross (33).

Gary O’Neil (50) equalised from a tight angle, but Brad Jones let Stanislas’s shot squirm through his hands (58).

After that it was a slow and painful death for the Middlesbrough fans as they never looked remotely like getting back into the game with West Ham always looking the more likely side to score.

There was still time for O’Neil to put a further stain on his performance moments before the end as he put a bad two footed tackle on Diego Tristan and was lucky not to be sent-off.Middlesbrough were not so lucky in their bid to stay in the Premier League though with their shocking away form eventually proving their undoing
