Hugo Rodallega Wigan liverpool Rodallega Rocks Liverpool as Wigan winWigan put a mighty blow in liverpool’s hope of making the top 4 this season with a 1-0 win over the reds.Roberto Martinez’s side took the attack to the visitors with some enterprising play on the break through their three-pronged forward line of Charles N’Zogbia, Marcelo Moreno and Rodallega. The Reds were lacklustre throughout and did not test Latics’ goalkeeper Chris Kirkland at all at the DW Stadium, and they were punished by a strike from Hugo Rodallega in the first-half.

It was richly deserved for Wigan, who played well on their re-laid pitch, and they were rarely troubled after the break.Liverpool did have there chances as torres hit the bar and had other chances but liverpool did not make the most of them tonight and they could pay big for this come the end of the season.

The Liverpool fans watched with anger as the visitors looked lost for inspiration and creativity which was met with a chorus of boos at the full-time whistle

Liverpool miss out on the chance to move to fourth place. They remain sixth, one point behind Man City and Tottenham, both of whom have at least one game in hand. However, the win lifts Wigan up to 14th and takes them four points clear of the drop zone.

Roberto Martinez and Rafael Benitez give their views to Sky Sports after Wigan’s hard-fought victory over Liverpool at the DW stadium.( video here)

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez:
We did not play well, especially in the first half. We did not show attitude, we worked hard after the break but without game intelligence. We had too many things that were wrong. We are not happy, we have to show more character if we want to be in the top four.”

Question is will they make the top four this season?
