Celtic v Rangers (Glasgow, Scotland)

One of the oldest rivalries in football, the Old Firm goes back to 1888 when Celtic and Rangers played their first game, described at the time as ‘a friendly encounter’. The rivalry as we know it today started in the early part of the 20th century as Celtic and their supporters, mostly Irish Catholic immigrants and their families, began to identify themselves with the cause of Irish Republicanism, and matches became an opportunity to express solidarity, both on and off the pitch, with the Irish fight against the British in Ireland.

Although Rangers were initially founded without ethnic or religious affiliation, as the club representing the British establishment they quickly became Celtic’s main rivals, and quickly grew to be associated with Unionism and Protestantism in the process.
Both clubs have acknowledged the sectarian issue in recent years and have taken steps to remove the problem from the stadiums. Rangers have in fact been praised by UEFA for banning sectarian songs from all home matches, although the problem still persists to some extent. While it is good that the clubs are making the effort, it is a huge task to deflate a rivalry that is based on over 400 years of history.
On the pitch, Rangers have a slight edge over Celtic, winning 153 games to Celtic’s 139. Rangers have also won more Scottish League Championships, with 52 titles to their name compared to Celtic’s 42. The two clubs still dominate Scottish football, and even though Hearts managed a one-off second place finish in 2006, it is unlikely that another club will break their stranglehold on the top two spots in the foreseeable future

2. Milan Derby-AC Milan Vs Inter Milan

In a similar way to the Fla-Flu described above, this rivalry started in 1908 as a group of AC Milan players broke off to form their own club, Inter Milan. In another parallel, Inter became associated with the city’s middle classes while AC continued to identify themselves with workers and migrants. Although these associations no longer exist within the clubs themselves – AC Milan is now owned by Italy’s Prime Minister – the rivalry between the two sets of fans is as fierce as ever, and culminated in the 2005 game which saw Inter fined 200,000 euro and ordered to play their Champions’ League games behind closed doors after fans threw flares onto the pitch, one of which hit Milan goalkeeper Dida, forcing him out of the game, which was soon abandoned.
Although recent meetings have been calm in comparison, there is no doubt that the Milan derby is one of the most intense games in world football, and as long as both clubs continue to enjoy their current levels of success, and continue to share the famous San Siro stadium, it will remain that way long into the future

3. El Clasico’ – Barca vs Real Madrid

While the two sides are not local rivals by any stretch of the imagination, anyone who does not think of this game as a derby should look up the term ‘El Clasico’ in the closest Spanish dictionary. In fact, the rivalry between the two Spanish giants is far more intense than that between Real and Atletico Madrid, or Barcelona and Espanyol, and so makes it into our top five.
This season’s games between the two could well be among the most exciting in El Clasico’s history. After Barcelona’s treble-winning season last year, which included a 6-1 mauling of Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid have retaliated in a serious way, spending over 200 million euro on some of the best players on the planet. Like any other derby, there is far more than three points at stake in games between the two, and after Barcelona’s unprecedented dominance of Spanish football last year Real Madrid will come out all guns blazing this season to re-establish themselves as the country’s top team.

Can you think of any others that should get on the wall of fame?

  • Gremio vs Internacional, the famous GRENAL from the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul state, south brazil.

Extreme rivalry (inumerous fights amoung the players and fans during the 100 years of the derby), two of the most sucessful clubs in brazil, but unkwon outside the country (except from Uruguay and Argentina that are right in the border with Rio Grande do Sul) because of the shitty brazilian media.
