The Top 10 Divers In World Football

The art of diving or ‘simulation’, as it is officially called, is almost as old as the game itself. Over the years, we’ve seen many master floppers, who hit the turf even if somebody as much as glances at them. Here’s an attempt at compiling a list of the world’s top 10 divers

1. CRISTIANO RONALDO

Arguably the world’s best football player, currently and for the past 3 years, Cristiano Ronaldo never ceases to amaze everyone with his perfectly timed dives, which fool referees and viewers alike. References include his recent theatrics in the match against AC Milan in the Champions League in November, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Also, during the World Cup, he continuously threw himself on the ground, most evidently in the match against Ivory Coast

   2. DIDIER DROGBA

Another one of the world’s most prolific strikers, though in the process of reforming, must still be counted in this list. The slightest of touch, and the big Ivorian has an even bigger reputation of going down.  In a recent interview, former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho admitted that Drogba is a diver, while defending CR9 for the same. Have a glimpse of the massive forward’s histrionics in the following clip.

   3. STEVEN GERRARD

Stevie G, as he is fondly called, is almost as talented at the art of diving as the players he publicly condemns for the same. Accused, and rightly, for falling over at the most minimal of contact, for not only his club, but also for his country, Gerrard brings shame to the game, especially so because he is an undeniably talented player. References include his dramatics against Andorra in the Euro 2008 qualifiers and at club level, against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final.

  4. ARJEN ROBBEN

Previously at Chelsea, and currently at Bayern Munich, Dutch Arjen Robben has an incorrigible habit of falling over and imploring the referee for giving a foul. His theatrics are for all to see, most evidently in the World Cup quarterfinal match against Brazil. It is pitiable to see a player of his quality to go to ground that easy!

  5. THIERRY HENRY

With a reputation as the world’s worst diver, Thierry Henry, the gifted French striker, is included in the list due to a series of dives in the 2006 World Cup. His theatrics in the final proved to be useful as he won his side a free kick, which led to the French 2nd goal. More than that, the world famous handball against Ireland which robbed the latter of their chance to play the World Cup, and which he so blatantly celebrated, should be counted as a more shameful act than all of his dives put together.

  6. FERNANDO TORRES

The remarkably talented goalscorer for Liverpool FC and Spain, possesses an equally remarkable talent for crumbling to the ground with an alarming regularity. For a player of his calibre, it is a shame to even be associated with a disgraceful act such as this. Clear references include matches against Chile in the FIFA World Cup when Torres hurled himself to the ground and the poor Chilean man Marco Estrada got sent off.

  7. EMMANUEL EBOUE

Known as one of the dirtiest (on pitch) players in the Premier League with the roughest tackles, he also has an abhorrent reputation as being one of the biggest floppers in world football. The massive footballer throws himself down relentlessly and laments to the referee more times than necessary. His blatant dives can be seen during the Champions League final against Barcelona in the May of 2006.

 8. ROBERT PIRES

Former Arsenal legend, and currently playing for Aston Villa, Pires is notorious for his dive against Portsmouth in 2003 which earned his side a penalty. In the post match conference, he famous denied any foul from his side saying ,’I did not dive and I am not a cheat. That is not the way I play.’ However, video evidence proves otherwise! dont blink look out for the dive at the start 9/10 for getting back mind.

 9.ROBINHO

Twinkle toes gets him name in the list because of some particularly notorious dives against Napoli and then against Barcelona. In September 2008, his dive got Bolivian Ignacio Garcia red-carded. Though he has pretty much reformed now, the name still brings back memories of his art of pretence.

  10. WAYNE ROONEY

To complete the list, we have another striker, this time in the form of the young red-blooded English Wayne Rooney. Despite proof to the contrary, the star continues to defend himself, making statements like ‘I’d never dive. I’d like to think of myself as an honest player. That’s the way I play. I don’t like diving, football doesn’t need it.’ All I can say is, practice what you preach, son!

What punishment must be imposed upon a diver has been a burning topic in the football circles since long. Sometimes the dive is such a perfect piece of playacting that it completely fools the referee and the public alike, at other times the offenders are caught and are punished with a yellow card as per standard FIFA rules.

Question i ask you who gets your vote for the top diver out of his talent? and yes maybe i have missed some.
