gomez-goals Gomez was the surprise  main man on the night, smashing four goals to end his 15-game drought in front of goal for Germany.

Gomez bagged 30 goals for his club this season, and he continued that rich vein of form with a 13-minute hat-trick either side of half time.

Heiko Westerman opened the scoring for Germany, who led 4-0 at the break as Piotr Trochowski and Gomez got in on the act.

Gomez bagged his first on 35 minutes, then added another on the stroke of half time before completing the triple on 48 minutes.

A fourth come in the final minute, adding to an earlier own goal as Germany racked up a magnificent seven – which could well have been at least 10 had they not hit the woodwork on three other occasions!
