The Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp last week bemoaned the burden of the Uefa Cup on his small squad, but any sense of displeasure at being in the tournament will have been assuaged today when his side landed the dream draw of AC Milan in the group stages.

Despite the obvious difficult of facing Milan, Portsmouth will fancy their chances of being one of the three sides to qualify from Group E, which also includes Heerenveen, Braga and Wolfsburg.

For Spurs the outcome was less satisfactory. The Uefa Cup has been Juande Ramos’s best friend in recent times, but it offered little succour today when his side were drawn in an awkward qualification group.

Spurs will face Udinese, loose cannons who are currently joint top of Serie A, Spartak Moscow, Dinamo Zagreb and NEC Nijmegen.

There are three former European Cup winners – Aston Villa Hamburg and Ajax – in Group F, but Villa will fancy their chances of qualification in a pool that also includes Slavia Prague and MSK Zilina.

The final English side, Manchester City have drawn opposition from four of Europe’s premier footballing nations: Germany (Schalke 04), France (Paris Saint-Germain), Spain (Racing Santander) and Holland (Steve McClaren’s FC Twente).

The group stages begin on October 23 and end on December 18. The top three teams in each group qualify for the knockout stages, to be joined by the eight third-placed teams in the Champions League groups. The final is in Istanbul on May 20 2009.

Group A: Schalke 04, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Racing Santander, FC Twente.

Group B: Benfica, Olympiakos, Galatasaray, Hertha Berlin, Metalist Kharkiv.

Group C: Sevilla, VfB Stuttgart, Sampdoria, Partizan Belgrade, Standard Liege.

Group D: Tottenham Hotspur, Spartak Moscow, Udinese, Dinamo Zagreb, NEC Nijmegen.

Group E: AC Milan, Heerenveen, SC Braga, Portsmouth, Vfl Wolfsburg.

Group F: Hamburg, Ajax, Slavia Prague, Aston Villa, MSK Zilina.

Group G: Valencia, Club Brugge, Rosenborg, FC Copenhagen, St Etienne.

Group H: CSKA Moscow, Deportivo La Coruna, Feyenoord, Nancy, Lech
