Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and one steeped in European tradition so we decided to have a look at some of their best ever games on the continent. Here’s our top five.
A fantastic European night at the Nou Camp in Barcelona, during Manchester United’s fantastic treble winning season saw them take FC Barcelona all the way in what is still regarded as one of the finest group games ever. This goal was the pick of the bunch.
A historical game at Wembley saw Manchester United become the first English club to lift the European Cup as George Best scored to help Matt Busby’s men enter the annals of English footballing folklore. It was an incredible achievement against a fantastic Benfica side and it’s one that will never get old for fans of the Red Devils.
Bayern Munich 1999
Perhaps the most famous European night in Manchester United’s history saw them defeat the mighty Bayern Munich in unbelievable circumstances. Two late goals, from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer downed the Germans and gave Sir Alex Ferguson his first Champions League trophy. Could they do it again this year? Last time I checked the odds they were nicely priced with Coral to take a third Champions League triumph in 2015-16.
Manchester United fans won’t have forgotten this game easily, as Rooney and co demolished the Italian giants Roma at Old Trafford back in 2007 with Cristiano Ronaldo putting on a masterclass of attacking display as Ferguson’s men marched onto the semi-finals.
It’s a game often remembered for John Terry’s slip and missed penalty as much as anything else, but Manchester United were majestic that night in Moscow as they beat fellow Premier League titans Chelsea and who can forget such a final? It had everything, including a thrilling penalty shootout finale.
