Ups and Downs From The Final Day Of The Premiership

With a number of shock results, the final day of the Premier League really has delivered it’s customary blow for a number of the clubs that were looking to end their season on what little high they could get from a maximum three points within their final fixture.

Thoughts had to be spared for Blackpool who were battling for their survival alongside four other clubs, needing a win in order to try to keep their head above the relegation waters but they were handed the challenge of overcoming champions Manchester United.

The game looked to be going in their favour as they helped themselves to a 2-1 lead during the game but the telling signs of quality between the two sides proved to be too much for the Tangerines to handle, finishing the game on the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline.

The loss for Blackpool means that they are now included within the three that are relegated, putting an end to their fairytale season in the top flight.

Wigan Athletic started the days proceedings with a huge task ahead of them, already finding themselves seated at the top of the three clubs that were set to be relegated and so when they were told that they were to travel to mid-table side Stoke City, they really stepped up their game, winning the game 1-0.

The win meant that they were able to move out of the relegation zone, finishing 3 points above the clubs that are now confirmed as playing Championship football next season.

Wolverhampton were another side that were fighting for Premiership status again next term and it seems that although they were unable to see off the challenge of Blackburn Rovers, losing 3-2, they will escape the chop and will once again have another season in the English top flight.

Newcastle United played host to West Brom and were looking good for the full three points today but their inability to keep a clean sheet saw them throw away a 3-0 lead over their visitors, allowing WBA to claw themselves back into the game to rescue a point, drawing the game 3-3.

The clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Birmingham City proved to be the most important game for both of the clubs, both sides having plenty still to play for as Spurs looked to beat Liverpool to the Europa League spot and Birmingham looking to avoid the drop.

The London club proved to be too strong for Birmingham and won the fixture 2-1, sealing the fate of their visitors and condemning them to Championship football next season.

Manchester City were once again on top form as they travelled to Bolton today on the high of winning the FA Cup. They proved to be too much of an obstacle for the home side and they were able to keep a clean sheet to take the game 2-0 and finish the day on level points with second placed Chelsea.

Premier League runners up Chelsea were also on the road, heading to Merseyside to take on Everton as they looked to play for little more than pride. The title chasers slipped up following their loss to champions Manchester United three weeks ago and it seemed to show in their performance today, losing to Everton 1-0 and looking unlike their usual attacking minded self.
