Zola described his shock after the 3-1 League Cup victory over Millwall was marred by violence in and around Upton Park.

One man was stabbed in the chest near the stadium among the chaos, with a number of arrests made for disorder and breaches of banning orders.

Zola said: “Here, I’ve played seven years and never seen anything like this. I was completely shocked.”

The Football Association have called for fans involved in Tuesday’s violent scenes at the West Ham against Millwall game to be banned for life.

Two extra-time goals saved West Ham against rivals Millwall in the Carling Cup amid large-scale crowd trouble.

Danny Gabbidon failed to clear a long throw and the ball fell to Neil Harris to open the scoring for the Lions.

Jack Collison hit a post for the hosts, but Junior Stanislas clipped in to level and scored a penalty as fans encroached on the pitch, before sub Zavon Hines sealed the win.
